Both build in-app tours, tooltips and checklists without code. What differs is how much you can publish, how many people can build it, and what the bill looks like.

Chameleon is one of the nicer-looking tools in this category, and it has spent the last couple of years turning itself into something more ambitious than a tour builder.
It now sells four AI agents alongside Tours, Tooltips, Launchers, Microsurveys, Interactive Demos and HelpBar, its in-app search bar. Copilot builds and optimises experiences, Ranger watches for problems, and Compass and Prism are still in beta. That is a lot of product, and for teams who want it, it is good.
It is also priced like a lot of product. Chameleon's entry plan starts at $279 a month for 2,000 tracked users and caps you at 10 live experiences; its Pro plan starts at $750. HelpHero does the tours, checklists and hotspots part, includes every feature on every plan, caps nothing, and prices only on how many monthly active users you have. Here is how the two compare.
Choose HelpHero if…
In-app guidance is the job you are buying for, you want unlimited experiences, events and team members on every plan, and you would rather read the price than book a call for it.
You want AI agents building and tuning your experiences, built-in surveys, interactive demos and universal search in one polished product, and the budget stretches to the Growth plan where most of it lives.

01Features
Where the overlap ends
Getting a new user through their first session, then pointing them at what they have missed, is the job most people buy either tool for. On that job the two overlap almost completely. Both give you these without writing code.
Code-free tours, tooltips and checklists anyone on the team can build
Themes and custom CSS so guidance matches your brand
Audience segmentation and targeting rules
Embedded content and in-app widgets alongside the tours
Scheduling, so experiences appear when you want them to
Analytics on how each experience performs
React, Angular, Vue and other single-page app frameworks
A free 14 day trial with no credit card
After that they head in opposite directions. Chameleon keeps adding surfaces and agents, then meters how much of them you use, where HelpHero keeps the surface small and puts all of it on every plan. Four differences do most of the deciding.
AI agents
Chameleon
Chameleon has built its recent positioning around four agents: Copilot, which builds, analyses and optimises experiences and is on every plan; Ranger, which watches for problems and arrives on Growth; and Compass and Prism, both in beta. Nothing in HelpHero does that. If you want the tool itself drafting and tuning your onboarding rather than a person doing it, HelpHero does not compete on that.
Surveys, demos and search
Chameleon
Microsurveys and NPS are first-class Chameleon experiences, included from the Startup plan alongside Tours, Tooltips, Embeddables and Launchers. On top of that Chameleon sells Interactive Demos and HelpBar, its universal in-app search, and runs a free plan covering unlimited demos, HelpBar and unlimited seats. HelpHero can embed a survey from your existing NPS provider inside a tour, but it does not have its own survey product, a demo builder or a search bar.
How much you can publish
HelpHero
Chameleon counts live experiences: 10 on Startup, a maximum of 20 on Pro, and unlimited only from Growth at $1,250 a month. It also caps custom events at 20 on Pro and Growth and localization at 5 languages on Pro. HelpHero has no cap on any of it: tours, checklists, hotspots, events and languages are unlimited on every plan, and the only thing your plan decides is how many monthly active users it covers.
Seats and the extras
HelpHero
Chameleon sells seats, though viewers are unlimited on all of them: 6 teammates on Startup, 10 on Pro, 15 on Growth, and $300 a month for another 5 on Pro. SAML SSO is a paid add-on too, at $400 a month on Pro. HelpHero does not charge per seat, so adding a colleague to review a tour never changes the bill.
The verdict
Chameleon covers more ground than we do: agents, surveys, demos and search in one product. HelpHero covers less of it, and never limits how much you publish.
02Pricing
What each one costs
Chameleon publishes starting prices, which helps, but they are all "from" figures: the pricing page asks you to book a call for exact pricing at your user count, and Enterprise is custom. Startup starts at $279 a month for 2,000 monthly tracked users, Pro at $750 for 5,000, and Growth at $1,250 for the same 5,000 billed annually.
That Pro figure gives a rare like-for-like: both companies quote a price at 5,000 users. HelpHero's 5,000 plan is $179 a month, with unlimited experiences and every feature included.
4.2×
more for the cheapest Chameleon plan with a published price at 5,000 monthly users ($750 a month on Pro, capped at 20 live experiences) than HelpHero charges for the same 5,000 users with no cap at all ($179 a month).

Chameleon prices and plan limits are quoted from chameleon.io on 31 July, 2026, where every figure is given as a starting price with exact pricing behind a call. Startup plan seat and experience details come from Chameleon's help centre, which also notes that going over your MTU limit is billed as an overage on the next invoice. SAML SSO is an add-on at $400 a month on Pro. HelpHero prices are per monthly active users; see the full pricing page for every tier.
The verdict
HelpHero costs a fraction of Chameleon at the one volume both publish, and nothing in the plan meters how many experiences, events or languages you use.
03Trade-offs
Where each one is the stronger choice
Chameleon is a broader and, in places, a more advanced product than ours. The agents are real and the surveys are built in. That breadth is what the price buys.
Chameleon is stronger at
Four AI agents, with Copilot building and optimizing on every plan
Built-in NPS and microsurveys rather than an embedded third party
Interactive Demos and HelpBar search, with a free plan for both
Unlimited live experiences, events and languages on every plan
Unlimited team members, with no per-seat charge
A published price for every tier, without booking a call
About a quarter of the cost at 5,000 monthly users
HelpHero is the better fit if in-app guidance is the job: tours, checklists and hotspots that any of your team can build, on a plan that includes everything and does not count what you publish. We built HelpHero, so discount the preference accordingly; both pricing pages are one click away if you want to check the numbers above.
HelpHero is the only tool on the market that has reasonable, sane pricing for small business / budgets.

04Questions
Common questions
Is HelpHero cheaper than Chameleon?
Yes, by a wide margin at the volume both publish. Chameleon Pro starts at $750 a month for 5,000 monthly tracked users; HelpHero covers the same 5,000 monthly active users for $179 a month with every feature included. Chameleon's cheapest plan, Startup, starts at $279 a month for 2,000 MTUs, where HelpHero's 2,500 user plan is $115.
Does Chameleon publish its full pricing?
Partly. Its pricing page lists a starting price for Startup, Pro and Growth and a side-by-side feature table for Pro, Growth and Enterprise, but every price is a "from" figure and the page asks you to book a call for exact pricing at your user count. Enterprise is custom. The Startup plan is also left out of the feature comparison table, so what it includes has to be pieced together from Chameleon's help centre.
How many experiences can I publish on Chameleon?
10 live experiences on Startup and a maximum of 20 on Pro, going unlimited from the Growth plan, which starts at $1,250 a month billed annually. Chameleon also caps custom events at 20 on Pro and Growth and localization at 5 languages on Pro and 10 on Growth. HelpHero does not cap experiences, events or languages on any plan.
How many people can use each tool?
Chameleon sells editor seats and includes unlimited viewers: 6 teammates on Startup, 10 seats on Pro, 15 on Growth, unlimited on Enterprise, with extra Pro seats at $300 a month for 5. HelpHero does not limit team members on any plan.
What does Chameleon do better than HelpHero?
The AI agents. Copilot builds, analyses and optimises experiences on every Chameleon plan, and Ranger, Compass and Prism add more on top. Chameleon also has built-in NPS and microsurveys, Interactive Demos and HelpBar universal search, where HelpHero expects you to embed a survey from your own provider and has no demo builder or search bar. Chameleon is the more polished, broader product; it is also several times the price.
Does either tool work in native mobile apps?
Neither does. Chameleon's help centre says it does not support native mobile apps but fully supports mobile web, and HelpHero is the same: it works in web apps, including on mobile and tablet browsers, but not inside a native iOS or Android app. If native mobile is a requirement, neither of these is the tool for it.
