The Affordable Userflow Alternative

Both build in-app tours and checklists without code. What differs is how much is metered: Userflow bills users, AI credits and environments separately.
Last updated 31 July, 2026

Userflow has grown into an adoption platform with an AI agent attached, and its pricing has grown with it.

It now sells two products. Adoption Studio is the part that overlaps with HelpHero (tours, checklists, tooltips, banners, targeting), priced on monthly active users. Adoption Agent is an AI assistant trained on your documentation that answers users in chat, priced on AI credits. You can buy either alone, and both draw on the same library of flows.

It is a capable product, and the analytics and the agent have no HelpHero equivalent. The narrower question is what each one costs if in-app guidance is all you need, and what is still ticking on the bill after you have paid.

Choose HelpHero if…

You want in-app guidance on one predictable bill, with every feature included and nothing metered by usage, and your analytics already live somewhere else.

Stick with Userflow if…

You want an AI agent answering user questions in chat, product analytics and surveys in the same tool as your onboarding, and the budget for a platform rather than a tours tool.

01Overlap

The same job, up to a point

Adoption Studio and HelpHero are aimed at the same work, and on the core of it they look alike. Both give you these without writing code.

  • Code-free tours, checklists, tooltips and banners
  • Targeting on user attributes, pages, events and segments
  • A resource centre users can open on demand
  • Custom CSS and fully white-labelled experiences
  • A/B testing and frequency control on what you publish
  • A free 14 day trial with no credit card

The differences are less about what you can build than about what Userflow adds around it, and what that costs to keep running.

Two products, two meters

HelpHero

Userflow splits into Adoption Studio, billed on monthly active users, and Adoption Agent, billed on AI credits at $20 per 100 beyond the 500 included, and unused credits do not roll over. Studio's included users run out at 1,000, after which it is $30 per additional thousand. Environments are metered too: 3 are included and each one beyond costs $425 a month. HelpHero has one number per tier and nothing that ticks.

An AI agent for inbound questions

Userflow

Adoption Agent is trained on your documentation and answers users in chat, surfacing the right flow when one exists and answering directly when it does not. It also exposes an MCP integration for Claude and ChatGPT. HelpHero has nothing equivalent: it shows the guidance you designed, to the users you targeted, and does not field questions.

Product analytics in the same tool

Userflow

Adoption Studio includes charts, funnels and dashboards, event tracking with custom event groups, and NPS and in-app surveys. HelpHero reports on how your tours perform and expects the wider analysis to happen in whatever tool you already use, which is fewer things to pay for but more things to join up.

What the entry tier costs

HelpHero

Adoption Studio starts at $500 a month, or $400 billed annually, and that buys 1,000 monthly active users. HelpHero covers the same 1,000 users for $55 a month with every feature included. If the job is in-app guidance rather than an adoption platform, that is a large difference to justify.

The verdict
Userflow does more and charges for more. Buy it for the tours and guides alone and you are paying platform prices for a tours job.

02Pricing

What each one costs

Userflow publishes its prices, which makes this straightforward. Adoption Studio is $500 a month, or $400 billed annually, and that includes 1,000 monthly active users. HelpHero covers the same 1,000 users for $55 a month.

The number worth watching is what happens after that. Userflow charges $30 per additional thousand users, $100 a month for the AI agent's 500 credits with more at $20 per hundred, and $425 a month for each environment beyond 3. HelpHero's tier price covers every user up to the tier limit, and there is nothing else on the meter.

7.3×

more to start on Userflow's Adoption Studio ($400 a month billed annually) than on HelpHero ($55 a month), for the same 1,000 monthly active users. Against Userflow's month-to-month price it is 9.1×.

Userflow prices and limits are quoted from userflow.com on 31 July, 2026. Its annual rate is a published 20% discount on the monthly one; the per-thousand and per-credit rates above are its own published rate cards, not our arithmetic on a total. HelpHero prices are per monthly active users; see the full pricing page for every tier.

The verdict
HelpHero costs a fraction of Userflow at the entry tier, and the gap widens as users, credits and environments accrue.

03Trade-offs

Where each one is the stronger choice

Userflow is building an adoption platform with an AI layer on top, and it is doing that well. Much of what you pay for is real capability HelpHero does not have.

Userflow is stronger at

  • An AI agent trained on your docs, answering users in chat
  • Product analytics: charts, funnels, dashboards and event groups
  • NPS and in-app surveys without a third-party embed
  • SOC 2 Type II and ISO 27001, with US and EU data residency

HelpHero is stronger at

  • One price per tier, with no usage meter running
  • A fraction of the entry price for the same number of users
  • Every standard and advanced feature on every plan
  • Nothing to true up at renewal: no credits, no per-environment fee

HelpHero is the better fit when in-app guidance is the whole job: tours, checklists and hotspots that anyone on the team can build, on a plan that includes everything and a bill that does not move when your users ask more questions. We have an obvious side in this, but Userflow's rate card and ours are both public, so you can check every number above yourself.

HelpHero is the only tool on the market that has reasonable, sane pricing for small business / budgets.

04Questions

Common questions

Is HelpHero cheaper than Userflow?

Substantially, at the entry tier. Userflow's Adoption Studio is $500 a month, or $400 billed annually, and includes 1,000 monthly active users. HelpHero covers the same 1,000 users for $55 a month. Userflow then charges $30 per additional thousand users, where HelpHero's tier price covers everyone up to the tier limit.

How does Userflow's pricing actually work?

It is two products with two meters. Adoption Studio is priced on monthly active users. Adoption Agent is priced on AI credits: 500 a month included, then $20 per 100, with one credit covering two AI messages and unused credits expiring at the end of the month. Both include 3 environments, and further environments are $425 a month each. You can buy either product on its own.

What does Userflow do better than HelpHero?

Two things stand out. Its Adoption Agent answers user questions in chat, trained on your own documentation, which HelpHero does not attempt. And Adoption Studio includes product analytics (charts, funnels, dashboards and event tracking) plus built-in NPS and surveys, where HelpHero reports on tours and leaves the rest to your analytics tool. Userflow also publishes SOC 2 Type II and ISO 27001 with US and EU data residency.

Do I need both Userflow products?

No. Userflow's own FAQ says either works standalone: Studio deploys guidance proactively, Agent responds when a user asks. Both draw on the same flow library, so adding the second later does not mean rebuilding. It does mean a second line on the bill, with its own meter.

Can I try either without talking to sales?

Yes, both. Userflow offers a 14 day trial of one product with no credit card, and HelpHero offers a 14 day trial with no credit card and no call. Neither one makes you sit through a demo first.

How hard is it to switch from Userflow to HelpHero?

HelpHero installs as a JavaScript snippet or through the Chrome extension, the same shape of job as Userflow's snippet, so getting it running takes minutes. Rebuilding your existing flows is the longer part, and our support team will help you plan it. If you rely on the AI agent or the analytics, that part has no HelpHero equivalent and is worth settling before you move.
